‘Waiting for Godot’ runs Oct. 2-7

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 1, 2014 — The Players will present “Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts” in the W.D. Powell Theatre on the campus Oct. 2-7.

Senior Nick Fleming and freshman Matthew Wallace will portray two lead characters who wait on subsequent days for the arrival of someone named Godot. The play was written by Nobel-prize winning author Samuel Beckett, who translated it from French to English for its debut in 1953.

Beckett’s play is highly acclaimed and was named the “most significant English language play of the 20th century” in a 1998 British survey taken of over 800 playwrights, actors, directors, theater professionals and art journalists.

David Burke, who in is his 29th year at , will direct the play. For him, the play is all about waiting.

“Everyone is waiting for something,” Burke said. “It is our responsibility to figure that out and actually wait on things of value.”

Burke said “Waiting for Godot” was second on a list he made of plays to direct before retirement in a few years.

“It is a very difficult and taxing play for all involved, including the audience in that it asks complicated questions,” Burke said.

Opening night will be Oct. 2 at 8:30 p.m. Additional show times are 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 3-4 and Oct. 6-7, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Oct. 5. Following each performance, a guest lecturer will lead a discussion.
