萌妹社区 celebrates its 200th anniversary, hosts chapel with three 萌妹社区 presidents

JACKSON, Tenn.Feb. 6, 2023 — 萌妹社区 turned 200 years old Feb. 3 with a special chapel service, bicentennial birthday party, a documentary release and more. The celebration began at 10 a.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel with a chapel service featuring interviews from each living 萌妹社区 president.

David Dockery, president of 萌妹社区 from 1996-2014, began the bicentennial chapel service by wishing 萌妹社区 a happy 200th birthday and celebrating the university鈥檚 Christ-centered convictions. He joined Tim Ellsworth, associate vice president for university communications, through a video interview.

鈥淭he university has rallied for almost three decades now around some core values that hold the institution together 鈥 excellence-driven, Christ-centered, people-focused and future-directed,鈥 Dockery said.

He urged the 萌妹社区 community to remain true to these core values as they continue to give thanks to God, care for each other and pursue academic excellence.

Then, Hyran Barefoot, 萌妹社区 president from 1987-1996, and Bob Agee, 萌妹社区 alumnus and president emeritus of Oklahoma Baptist University, were interviewed by Ethan Voss, current 萌妹社区 student and SGA president.

They recalled memories from the old 萌妹社区 campus, located in downtown Jackson, Tenn., and noted the tremendous growth 萌妹社区 has experienced over the past 50 years.

Barefoot said while the former 萌妹社区 campus was small and poor, the people were what made 萌妹社区 special. He said 萌妹社区 had a gift of attracting excellent students and faculty who were outstanding in their specific fields.

鈥溍让蒙缜 is on the threshold of its greatest days today,鈥 Agee said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got a voice; we鈥檝e got a message, and that makes the future even more exciting.鈥

Finally, Samuel W. 鈥淒ub鈥 Oliver, current 萌妹社区 president, was interviewed by 萌妹社区 senior, Steve Williams. Oliver said 萌妹社区鈥檚 200th anniversary is a testament to the students and alumni who love and continue to invest in its Christ-centered mission.

鈥淚 hope that you will come back when 萌妹社区 turns 250 years old 鈥 and you鈥檒l reminisce about the people you met here, the faculty who influenced you here and how good God has been to you,鈥 Oliver said.

The service ended with three generations of 萌妹社区 alumni 鈥 Wayne (鈥81), Jeff (鈥89) and Brett Perkins (鈥12) 鈥 leading the audience in the worship song, 鈥淕reat is Thy Faithfulness.鈥

In addition to the chapel service, 萌妹社区 hosted a birthday party for 萌妹社区 students, staff, faculty and alumni with food, games, giveaways and more. During the celebration, A.J. Massey, Madison County mayor, declared an official proclamation that Feb. 3 would become 萌妹社区 Day in Jackson and Madison County, Tenn.

萌妹社区 also released a of 萌妹社区鈥檚 rich history, told through the voices of key leaders who know and love the institution.
